Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
